Pre-School-in-a-Box

Parents as Teachers

Some children are abused and neglected even as infants, but the extent of the damage may not be known until they enroll in school. They start out far behind and often spend their K-12 years in frustration and failure. Because CFLC believes in early intervention, Pre-School-in-a-Box begins with children as young as four months and continues until kindergarten. CFLC's  Pre-School-in-a-Box served 73 children and 64 parents and caregivers in 2009 through funding provided by First Five of Riverside.

The nationally recognized "Parents as Teachers" curriculum is utilized to assess the development of each child every two weeks, in thirty indexed categories covering cognition, motor skills, language and social-emotional development.

Parents are advised of areas of concern and taught how to play interactively, read, tell stories, sing and even "make believe" with their children. Certified parent educators show moms and dads how to "get down on the floor" and actively engage their children in all these activities, literally on their level, and in their own homes.

“If it weren’t for CFLC I would be home sitting around playing video games.”
